A former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has called for the upgrade of the National Defence College (NDC) to a university and allow the award of Master's and Doctorate degrees.
Abubakar, who spoke during the college's Silver Jubilee Lecture in Abuja yesterday, said the National Defence University if established, would focus on strategic matters at the highest echelon of government.
He noted that the college needs to be more active in the formulation and review of policies and strategy documents that concern defence management in Nigeria.
"It is worrisome that after 25 years, the NDC is still occupying a temporary facility due to non-completion of its permanent site," he said.
He urged the federal government to complete the permanent site at Piwoyi as a matter of priority. Abubakar also advocated for alternative funding arrangements for the college outside the regular budgetary allocations.
